Getting Assistance

Ombudsperson

The minute you decide to seek outside help for a problem – be it a conflict, dispute over a grade or failure, or a funding and tuition issue – you should consider contacting the Office of the Ombudsperson.  Meeting with the Ombudsperson is an informal process, and should be your first line of action in resolving a problem.

The Office of the Ombudsperson for students offers confidential, informal, independent, and neutral dispute resolution services to all members of the student community by providing information, advice, intervention and referrals.

The Ombudsperson can provide you with the information you need to be proactive about finding a resolution to your issue, and they can also assist you in identifying and evaluating options for resolving and managing conflicts and providing help in pursuing those options.  The Ombudsperson refers students to appropriate persons in order to resolve problems, and when requested, the Ombudsperson can act as a facilitator or mediator between students and other members of the university community.

To contact the Office of the Ombudsperson, you can drop by the office in Room 5202 of the Brown Building, 3600 McTavish Street, call (514-398-7059) or email.  Fill out an intake formbefore attending your meeting with the Ombudsperson, and don’t forget to bring with you any documents you have related to your case.

Student Advocacy

The Student Advocacy Programme Clinic is an independent, free, and confidential service for McGill students. They provide advice and representation to McGill students accused of an academic or non-academic disciplinary offence or who are involved in a dispute with the University or a representative of the University.  And advocate will:

  • facilitate discussion and negotiation between McGill students, University officials, and administrators.
  • ensure that any student accused of a disciplinary offence, or wishing to file a formal complaint against the University or one of its representatives, receives proper advice regarding their rights and University procedures.
  • assist students with informal and formal disciplinary and grievance proceedings by helping to prepare evidence and other documents in support of the student’s case. Advocates can also represent students in disciplinary and grievance hearings as well as other formal processes in the University context.

The Student Advocacy office is located in the Shatner Building, 3840 rue McTavish.  If you wish to speak to an advocate, you can drop by any time M-F between 9-5PM, or contact them by telephone at 514.398.4384, or by email.  For more information, visit the Student Advocacy website.
